Owners of Sueño Azul Resort timeshares often find themselves trapped in endless contracts with rapidly increasing maintenance fees which ultimately stems from a mis-sold timeshare contract. Over recent years there have been a number of ground-breaking rulings regarding mis-sold timeshares by many timeshare groups and resorts which have resulted in refunds and compensation. Many owners of Ona Sueno Azul timeshare contracts are entitled to, or have already made claims.
Been to better in Salvaje
First time I have stayed at Sueno Azul and probably the last. For a “gold star” resort it was a bit lacking.
First of all I was asked to leave a 25 euro/week deposit for water and electricity. First time ever that I have been asked for that. Secondly, we ordered the 25 euro food package that was offered and it was only when we got to the room and found nothing that we realised that they had charged for lesser 15 euro pack and we wouldn’t get most of the food and drink anyway. What we did get from them was barely edible when it came.
The villa itself was quite nice although it seemed to have been built by someone with no understanding of construction. Plug sockets are in inaccessible places with the bedrooms only having one each. Light switches are barely attached to the walls and one of the sockets in the living room shorted if you sat on the couch without pulling it out first.
There is no light in the master bedroom only bedside lamps and one of those had to be unplugged to charge our phones. There was no ceiling fan in the master bedroom either; there was a plug in stand fan but with only one plug socket, that was no use.
The living room had the light/fan right in the corner so it lit/blew onto no one. The tv showed only half of the English tv channels listed but it does have a dvd player which came in handy.
The patio has no privacy due to you only being separated from the footpaths by a small hedge. Beyond that was a communal grassy area that was used at night by the local dogs as a latrine. This made flies quite a problem to the point where if you sat outside it looked like everyone had nervous twitches.
The pool area is tiny. Good enough to cope when it is quiet but if the resort gets busy then I presume you all just stand next to each other in the pool and look around awkwardly like people on a train do.
Its not all doom and gloom though. The bar is excellent. The food there is fantastic and the prices are good. The bar staff are very friendly and, unlike other places I have stayed, actually speak English. Some bars I have been to you ask for a juice/squash/cordial for the kids and they look at you like you’re growing another head. The Wednesday BBQ is magnificent. A salad buffet and then the meat comes over. A big sausage, a giant chicken leg, a steak and a pork chop per person. Doesn’t matter where I stay in Tenerife, from now on I’ll be there on a Wednesday for the BBQ.
In conclusion. Stay somewhere else but go there for the bar. The bar there is without a doubt the best in Callao Salvaje and yes, I have tried all the others.

Beware of the cockroaches!
We stayed at this WimPen run villa complex in November/December 2017 While the complex of Ona Sueño Azul is very pleasantly located in the small resort of Callao Salvaje our stay there was totally spoiled by a cockroach infestation. When we arrived the villa we were allocated (No 29) seemed perfectly fine and extremely clean.
By the following morning when we went to the kitchen area to make tea the cutlery drawers and lower cupboard area were alive with scuttling cockroaches. We complained to reception and cleaners were immediately dispatched to the villa and we were assured this was a once off problem and would be dealt with and we could return to the villa once the cleaners had left.
All seemed fine until the next morning when the same problem happened again, cockroaches on the kitchen counter areas and in the drawers. We complained again and the resort manager said it would be rectified by putting a cockroach trap where the kitchen plumbing exited.
We were told the local council usually fumigated the outside sewage system but with financial cutbacks this hadn’t been done and the cockroach infestation was a result of this.
The cockroach trap didn’t work and the problem persisted. We asked to be moved to another villa but this was not possible as no other villa was available. One week after we arrived a professional fumigation company was called in to fumigate the villa.
This did not work either and and the infestation spread to the shower area in the bathroom. Finally after spending 11 nights in an infested villa we we eventually moved to another villa for our last few nights. Of course our holiday was totally spoiled and it ended up costing much more than we had budgeted as we had to eat out the whole time because of the fear of getting food poisoning from preparing food in an infested area.
I wrote a letter of complaint to WimPen management at the time of our ruined holiday and nearly 3 months later they replied to say they were satisfied they had addressed the problem by fumigating the villa. Really WimPen?
We all know cockroaches and other insects are much more common in these hot climates and we all expect to see them on our holidays but not to have them scuttling out of the drawers and in cupboards and across the floors of our living areas when we rent accommodation. Ona Sueño Azul prides itself on its upmarket holiday accommodation.
This was definitely not the case for us.
Poor value for money but fun
I stayed in no. 18 and it was good. It was pretty clean and most things came with it however, you do have to pay for the safe key, electricity and anything extra. The man who runs it, Iain, has been there for at least 25 years in the same job but hasn’t really grasped the concept of costumer service. He will be very public about telling you off if you do something against what he wants. The pool is nice but the bar is VERY expensive for what you get. It is all frozen microwaved food from Lidl. For 3 of us to have a very basic 2 course meal with drinks was €61 whereas in Las Americas, you can get more food and much better quality food for €40! Not good value for money. Also, at 9:30am ish, on Monday and Tuesday, they mowed the lawn right outside my window and the nearby villas!
Apart from that, the villas are nice and there is plenty to do if you get a car. There is a shop called Tony’s Tickets just down the road and a very helpful man runs it. He organises all the activities and sells them. You can also go places by yourself eg: the volcano or the beaches. At the resort there is the pool, pool table, pool bar, table tennis and a kids play area.
We went on a sailing trip to see pilot whales and to swim with turtles. This was good except, I got extremely sea sick, but dad enjoyed it! The volcano is amazing but the cable car is scary! They pack it and at each pillion, it tips dramatically. There is not an awful lot to do near the Wimpen resort though. It is approximately 20 minutes from the airport.
WiFi can be bought for £18 per week or for free in the bar providing you buy a drink (more expensive in the long run). If you don’t purchase something, Iain gets very… itchy?!
The country itself is not the most beautiful but parts of it are. Most people speak English and Spanish. The road system is a bit complicated until you get used to it. Would recommend Tenerife Pearl to those in search of something to take home to remind you of the holiday. It is not just all jewellery! Tenerife is heavily commercialised building wise and with banana trees. It can reach 40°c midday, 20°c in the morning and night in the summer (approx.). The beach near the resort does have black sand but it is fine. The beach in Las Americas has goldy-black sand and is much bigger therefore, there is more space even though the area is busy.
I would recommend it to people looking for a very chilled out holiday. If you are looking for a more active holiday,
Tenerife is really not the place even though there can be a lot of hikes and walking.
NOT THE BEST FROM WIMPEN
Have owned at Las Brisas for 20 years plus and have visited all the Wimpen resorts but this resport just does not meet the standard.
Villa very clean and adequate towels etc. Cleaning staff do an amazing job on their half weekly clean.
Reception staff could do with some training from the staff at Las Brisas – SMILE!
We reported a fault on the toilet in the ensuite bathroom at least 3 times during the holiday and it was still not fixed when we left.
Stayed in Villa 27 and had the neighbour from hell opposite us at the rear of the villa on the patio side – an English couple who are owners had their television on all day from early morning tuned to English day time telly – it must have been on its loudest setting so they could listen whilst in their garden but so could everybody else – we gave up reading in the end and answered the questions from the quiz show they were watching!! We also listened to all their telephone conversations made at the top of their voices not to mention the lunch party they gave on the sunday!!!! The next neighbour down from them has dogs that bark night, noon and morning!!!
Villa has inadequate air con – only in the lounge so the bedrooms get very warm even with the ceiling fan on. The main bedroom has no ceiling fan but we did get a fan from reception – excellent for racking up the electricity charge!!
T.V. why no satallite as per Las Brisas??
WiFi – very expensive and keeps going off – had to get maintainence to sort for us – very greedy in this day and age to charge per unit.
Bar area staff are excellent – helpful and always have a smile!!!
Pool very small and I do wonder and did ask at reception if it is checked ?? We had to visit the Doctor for a course of antibiotic injections for two members of our party due to ear infections which we are told can only have come from this pool, we did not swim anywhere else. We were at the pool at different times of the day and not once did I see anybody take samples for checking. Incidentially, if you need the Doctor then Dr. Blanco surgery at the bottom of the road is well recommended – very gentle when injecting antibiotics into your buttock!
Overall a disappointing resort and not one of Wimpen’s best.
Disappointing for Wimpen
I have stayed at almost all of the Wimpen resorts in the Canaries over the years and I think this one features low on the list. Compared to somewhere like Las Brisas in Lanzarote… well there is no comparison.
The villas are fine, a little dated perhaps. There is only aircon in the lounge which is madness when it gets as hot as it does. Electricity cost us 33Euros for a week. The Wifi is maddeningly expensive, you pay per device which when there are four of you, is prohibitive. We chose to use the Pool wifi the days we were at the pool, which isn’t very good quality.
The pool is on the small side, and although we didn’t have an issue with loungers or umbrellas, that may be different during the school holidays. The pool bar food was nice, especially the zinger chicken burger and the fries! Ian is also a credit to the place, and ever helpful on the water / ice cream / wifi front.
Reception weren’t particularly friendly – although allowed us to change pool towels regularly. To check out later than 10am would incur a 90euro fee, regardless of what time the next occupants are to arrive.
We didn’t spend any time of an evening in the bar, in my view its far too warm to be sat inside a bar with no air con on. Again, by comparison, most of the other Wimpen resorts have large outside seating for day and night.
Callao Salvaje is quite small and dilapidated and appears to have suffered from the economic crisis – there are many unfinished hotels and apartment complexes nearby. There are a dozen or so restaurants – most pretty mediocre – saved only by Chez Mimi – which was outstanding.
The beach is black sand/stone, and the umbrellas seem to be miles from the actual sea! We only went one day, and the others went to Costa Adeje (and the Kaluna Beach Club which was excellent).
Finally, the trip was greatly spoiled by my contracting a bacterial infection (on lip) which I’m told can only be from the pool. Heavy antibiotics have been required following my return. I’m confident it can be traced to the pool as other family members stayed in the same villa the week before, two of whom have had to be treated for the same infection (in ears). I would never have expected this to happen at a Wimpen resort, although I’m aware that this can be a common occurrence on holiday.
Mostly positive but negatives if looking for family fun
Just returned from this complex and yes, I will agree, the villa is lovely, nice and spacious with 3 bedrooms, so no need for sofa bed etc. Good patio with barbeque and 4 sunbeds. Well equipped and comfortable. I believe they have all been redecorated so ours was very nice. Kids beds were very comfortable, double bed sagged in middle, however clean sheets twice a week. Great ease for getting sunbeds, we never made it to the pool until at least 10.30 am every day and yet we still could have pick of the beds, also lots of shade available. (This was a definite positive for August). Pool nice size and allowed you full view of children at all times, also very nice temperature of salt water.
Now negatives – normally I do not moan but we had a lovely first three days where our kids were allowed lots of fun in the pool. They were allowed to jump in and generally have fun, however then it all changed. The lifeguard banned them from the water everytime they dared to jump in, even when they generally forgot and as kids do, splashed a bit. I could understand this when the pool was busy and I am a responsible parent and would ensure that they did not affect anyone else’s pleasure of swimming, however, most of the time they were the only people in the pool and yet they were still not allowed to have fun. The lifeguard wanted to ban them from using the pool and kept making them sit on side. My son is 7 – need I say more. This would have been more understandable if he had maintained this rule throughout but it seemed that depending upon your nationality or what day of the week it was he changed the rules. It also depended upon what he was doing, ie when chatting up the girls or talking on his phone, then he didn’t seem to care what you done. Also, there are set times when you can have inflatables or play ball games in the pool. This I completely agree with, however one night at around 7pm (we were the only ones in the whole pool area) my husband, myself and our son were playing with an inflatable ball, just throwing to each other in the shallow end, yet immediately the manager descended upon us telling us off, like naughty school kids. This was ridiculous as not another sole, other than the lifeguard was around, also we were not even splashing.
Another criticism is of the so called friendliness of the bar owners. We found they were very selective with their friendliness. Anyone who ate regularly in the bar became great pals of the owners, however, anyone just having a drink or occasional snack was not made to feel very welcome at all. We were told that they were struggling and profits were down, so obviously our contribution was not enough to them!! (we were not the only people to comment on this)
Saying all this we did enjoy our holiday and would recommend it, but not if you have NORMAL children who want to laugh and have responsible fun. We got the impression that older, child-free couples were more the desired occupants
