Idyllic family retreat
Melfort village is an ideal location to get away from it all yet has enough facilities to keep the whole family entertained.
Accommodation and price
We paid a discounted £295 for three nights (Sat – Tuesday) in the ‘Old Haybarn’, which was decent value for a family of 8. It was a surprise birthday present for my father who turned 60.
The cottage was spacious, modern and provided everything you would expect from a home from home. The two bathrooms, large kitchen and living room was useful for a family get together. The log fire was a nice touch, although we didn’t need it given the warm weather.
The location was great set about a mile down a single road track, gave you that feeling of remoteness, yet only about 30min from Oban. The grounds were inviting and well-manicured. Five to ten minutes’ walk from Melfort is the sea loch, which offers beautiful views.
Facilities:
Onsite facilities were a bonus, given the relatively small nature of the complex. Reception staff were very pleasant and helpful.
One thing I would say is that there is only one restaurant. I was a bit disappointed to be told when we arrived (after a long journey) that it was fully booked. That night we had to order takeaway (rather than face driving again to the nearest village), the take away was expensive and not the greatest. However, we ate lunch in the restaurant the next day and we could see why it was so busy. So I would advise booking ahead of your stay.
Would I have paid the regular price to go back? Maybe at a push, if it was another special family occasion
Worst timeshare experience in Scotland yet!
We have stayed in Britain 6 times in timeshare exchange and this has been the worst experience.
First of all, although cottages were cute, they gave one roll of toilet paper for a week and did not exchange towels one time during the week. The laundry was a good walk and took 4 hours to wash and dry one load and it was never dry, had to hang for over 24 hours afterwards to be completely dry. the cost of laundry wash/dry was about 3 pounds per load.
The beds were hard and were only 2 twins for 4 people expected to stay with a couple single couch beds, for one person each. Our son was allocated to an airbed on the floor due to being expected to stay in a sofa bed, that had a stained mattress and springs sticking out all over it on the bottom floor away from us.
There was no hot water for the first 2 days and when they got it fixed , it required changing the element on a day which happened to be my birthday so we had to get out while it was fixed. They did not offer to relocate us for the repair.
Once “fixed” it bubbled and steamed and the water was literally boiling after that, our 9 year old son was almost scalded washing his hands after using the toilet. It took another whole day to get this straightened out.
After that, the rust from the water heater was in the water and it was orange and dirty looking. We then got a nice hefty electric bill for 49 pounds for the cost of electric when in fact, we did no laundry in the unit, it was never warm in the unit the whole time we were there and we had only 4 days of hot water use.
Would sure like to know how much we paid towards the water heater repair.
We have never paid more than 30 pounds in any of the previous resort stays for electricity and they had ensuite laundry!
Walled garden is too cold in winter
The location is very very good and the standard of furnishings etc is good and the price was good.
It was however uncomfortably cold in the living room, despite all storage heaters and the electric fan heater being on – I think the design with high ceiling height which is open from the hall makes this space difficult to heat, anyway we ended up sitting in the living room with our coats on (a bit much when paying £10 per day for electricity).
Also there could be more attention to detail – no bottle opener, no scart lead/connection to DVD player, dead insect squashed on to roller blind, light shade broken, dog mess outside the door, towel rails didn’t work, ensuite was cold etc. So overall I’d give it 2.5 stars out of 5.
Would go back and give some of other cottages a try but not the walled garden in winter
Dated, not worth the money
Family stay for a few days in one of the cottages in site.
Cottage was dated and damp in the bathrooms, but other than that clean and adequate.
Amenities were badly in need of attention especially games room and the pool changing rooms.
Restaurant on site was however, fantastic, well worth staying somewhere else and visiting here.
Pricy for what you DON’T get
In lots of ways the setting alone should give this top marks, however, there are plenty of other options in the area which give you not just the stunning scenery, but who give you what the modern traveller expects for their money.
You will have to pay a hefty price for your electricity, on top of the rental. If you hit bad weather and need to wash some clothes you will have to walk to the communal washing machine and waste part of your holiday without even the comfort of your cottage, as you wash them.
The internet is laughable.
The cottage while pleasant enough was looking very tired and the grounds were full of weeds and looked very unkempt.
For the price we paid and the reviews, we expected far better than what we actually got.
We would go back but only if they reduced their prices or upped the standards.
Total waste of time and money
We arrived on the due date but, unfortunately, the nearby restaurants were all closed, two of them for a week’s holiday.
The ‘farm cottage’ was not within easy walking distance of the clubhouse or the restaurant.
The cottage had a very ‘musty’ smell about it.
The lounge furniture was very uncomfortable and bedrooms 2 and 3 were ridiculously small with equally small beds!! The bathroom facilities were far from impressive.
Whilst the village is in lovely countryside, it appeared to be miles from nowhere. We did not stay for the whole week.
