I decided to book the Leila Playa as I was heading to Spain from the 20th to the 24th June for my birthday, which was a last minute decision. I was a little concerned about the location as I know it is close to the motorway as I am familiar with the area so I called in advance to be sure the apartment was set closer to the sea which they stated it was so I went ahead and booked.
The arrival was good as we arrived late in the evening about 11.00pm and we felt confident it was going to be an enjoyable stay.
Unfortunately the apartment was not what we expected it was on the block beside the motorway, the room and was very noisy, dated interior, the sea view was not quite as described unless you craned your neck to look around the balcony. After not getting much sleep after 2 nights due to the noise of the road, housekeeping area (located outside our door) who kicked off at 7.30am every morning and very bright yellow curtains where the sun beamed into the room at 5am every morning, I decided to speak to reception to ask if it was possible to move, I was just not enjoying the experience but equally dislike complaining as an empathetic hotelier.
I spoke to the receptionist to explain my problems at which stage we were abruptly interrupted by a gentleman called Mr.Jose Antonio Ray, who was sat on a desk behind reception listening. He decided it was important for him to become involved even though I did not ask to speak to anyone in charge. He said it was not possible to move me as there were no other apartments available, although it was clear the resort was still selling on booking.com. I explained to him about the noise, our tiny balcony that had two air conditioners blowing out hot air onto them and the curtains that were in no way black out, I even offered for him to show him the apartment to which he declined. He then went about telling me that I had booked a one bed apartment and this is what I got and it was in his own words ‘Not my problem’.
I did not want to start an argument at this stage as I and my partner knew we would not get anywhere with him. His tone was aggressive and his character abrupt, in all of my years in hospitality I have never encountered a hotel team member in customer service as rude as Mr. Jose A Ray. Surely he could have made the time to at least listen to my problems and try to offer some solution if it was not possible to move us?
At this point we decided to find a new hotel and I checked out an hour later. On returning the keys I asked was there any form of refund that could be offered for the last 2 nights to which he responded ‘You want to leave, you leave, we offer no refund’! I totally understand it was prepaid but due to fact he was unwilling to help surely he could have been more diplomatic in his dealings?
The service journey and encounters at the Leila Playa was very unfortunate particularly due to the fact we only had 4 days in Spain and I was there to celebrate my birthday.
There are many better places to stay in the Costa with far superior service and standards. The other reviews are glowing due to this being a time share operation that have lovely apartments closer to the beach but as a private booker you are relegated to these awful one bed apartments by the road. Do yourself a favor and book somewhere else, no one should be subjected to this level of terrible customer service whilst trying to relax on holidays. They have alot to learn about good customer service at the Leila Playa.
Ex-Timeshare hotel adjacent to the beach
We booked this hotel as part of a group booking. Our room was a one bedroomed apartment, was dated and dark, but had everything anyone could possibly need, including dishwasher and washing machine! The washing machine actually came in handy as there was no room service, despite saying to leave towels in the bath to be washed. There was washing up and laundry essentials, which was helpful.
Depending where you are in the hotel, depends on the quality/decoration of room. Ours was C10, which was all very brown and 1970’s, but comfortable enough for a week. My parents, on the other side of the ‘resort’, had a newer looking airy room with a modern bathroom and furnishings, plus sliding doors facing the beach.
There is a bar/restaurant, which serves good food and has an hour’s ‘happy hour’ late afternoon, which is excellent value.
There is a kids club, which was only on once that we know of during our week’s stay. Other than that, there is the swimming pool, mini golf and a pool table. There is a quarter-size tennis court for mini tennis. A couple of times during our stay, there was quality evening entertainment, e.g flamenco and a singer, which you needed to book a table at the restaurant, but worth a watch.
The hotel is a horseshoe figuration facing the sea with a promenade going both left and right, which is nice for a walk to other restaurants or just to stretch your legs.
The hotel grounds has a lot of steps, but there is a road going down one side which you could use if you have a buggy or a chair etc.
Other than the bar/restaurant staff, we didn’t find this hotel particularly friendly. The lifeguard was very strict with children (even with parents), repeatedly telling them to take ringos or inflatables out of the pool, which I found strange, especially with the hotel not being busy as it was not peak season.
We did enjoy our holiday, but it would not be a hotel we would book again.
One word of warning. Unless you have booked directly with the hotel, you will receive an electricity bill upon check out. I questioned Reception after I heard another lady comment and was told that power in Spain in very expensive. In all my years of travelling, I’ve never paid additionally for electricity, except in the ‘old days’ where there was a meter in a chalet for instance. After making my complaint, I was told that I was not eligible for an additional bill, which I found odd as I booked via Booking.com and not directly with the hotel. My reason for mentioning this matter is that although we didn’t receive a bill, my parents did. Despite them not using any electrical appliances other than the kettle and a/c whilst sleeping, they had to pay an additional EURO60 on check out. Worth bearing in mind.
This hotel used to be totally Timeshare, but as owners have passed, the accommodation has reverted to the hotel ownership to rent out. They obviously haven’t done anything with those apartments, hence the difference between accommodations.
The grounds of the resort are beautiful and well kept. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the units.
They are beginning to look tired and in need of a refresh.
Due to cost saving cut backs, to have your apartment cleaned mid week there is now a charge, towels are refreshed mid week and the bins emptied, but not the bedding.
Great location but promises are not fulfilled and its expensive and run down!
Positive first: Location is great. Right be the sea and boardwalk to Mijas. Gardens are lovely and there is free parking. Doesn’t get better than this.
Negatives: Hotel charges a hefty EUR 45 fee for settling electricity consumption (you also pay for the electricity). Totally out of line with any work associated with the handling and not mentioned on the Internet page. There is no cleaning during the stay unless you pay extra. Apartment had a power outlet with no cover and I got electrocuted. Really dangerous if you have children. Took 2 days to have a cover fitted.
What really put me off was that staff had confirmed me in a duplex 3 bedroom apartment on the top floor facing the pool. What I was assigned in the end was a 2 bedroom on ground floor facing the street. Its utterly unprofessional to give such promises to guests and then not deliver. Staff didn’t care one bit.
All 2 bedroom apartments are on the lower level and facing the street – something which is n
Accommodations was fine but the extra costs for things that would be standard such as midweek clean and towel change is not suitable, opening times of the restaurant was very misleading as one advert said one thing and another said something else
Great resort and location.
For a very relaxing vacation by the beach. Boardwalk for long walks and restaurants along the shore. Every room has a terrace and view of the beach and the water. On a clear day we were able to even see the Gibraltar hills. Shopping across from the resort. Bus stop in front of the resort that takes you to Marabela and Malaga city centre.
