Great Stay in the Highlands
My wife and I spent a long weekend in the Highlands near Ballater, at the Hilton Craigendarroch. Wonderful place! The room was beautiful and spacious, the location was absolutely great and the facilities were terrific. We had a lovely dinner at the restaurant and the bar staff could not have been nicer. I would really recommend this resort. We saw (did not use) a tennis court, we saw (2) pools and (jacuzzis) and we made use of the gym (small but workable).
Not what we expected !
We have to say that we were rather disappointed with our accommodation at the new Grand Vacations Suites at Craigendarroch, built a short time ago.
Although the suite was beautifully clean and well presented, unfortunately, we found many problems with it! Firstly, the bed was very uncomfortable, and both my husband and I woke in the morning with sore backs. The bed creaked every time we turned over and the duvet was far too hot for the time of year – a 12 tog duvet for the hot summer months which we had was far too much!
Also we found that there was hardly any space to put our clothes – not that we had a lot for 2 nights, but the room distinctly lacked storage space for clothes – there was a small wardrobe housing an ironing board and iron, a luggage rack and I must say, quite a lot of hangers but there was no chest of drawers in the room at all to put underwear, nightwear, light t-shirts etc.
Although there was space in the room, there was a lot of “dead” space where they could easily have put a chest of drawers. There was a dressing table with two very slim drawers for housing make-up, brushes combes etc. and there was an enormous mirror with a dressing table seat, which, unfortunately, when you sat in it, was so low that you couldn’t see your face in the mirror!
There was also a large mirror over the beautiful wall TV which was over the lovely wall electric fire, however, you would have needed to be 7 feet tall to be able to see into the mirror! There was a microwave set into a unit, some very nice crockery in the same unit, a toaster and kettle on the unit and some nice glasses, so that you could make a cup of tea or coffee as needed, and cook yourself a microwave meal if wanted, with a glass of wine. However, we both found the bathroom to be a disaster!
There was a beautiful granite vanity sink on a pedestal – however, the actual sink was set so far back into the unit that you had to bend really very far over to be able to wash your face/hands and brush teeth without spilling water all over the front of the unit which then ran down onto the floor ! We both ended up with painful backs having to manoeuvre ourselves into such a position that this water cascade didn’t happen!
This was just not practical, I’m afraid! Next was the toilet very close to the right-hand wall – that was fine, but the towel radiator was located immediately next to the toilet, so it was impossible to sit on the toilet without firstly knocking the towels down onto the floor, and also, rising and doing the same thing again! Why this radiator was located immediately next to the toilet is anybody’s guess, because it could have been located anywhere on another wall, as it was a large bathroom! The shower was quite spectacular and large with a very big shower head fixed on the roof – now this is fine if you like your whole head and hair soaked when taking a shower, but I certainly don’t, and prefer to wash my hair at a sink. However, there was a hand-held shower head you could use fixed on the wall, very low down, but it would have been much, much better fixed at the normal height a shower head should be on a wall, instead of having it so low down that it did absolutely nothing!
I am sorry we seem to have dissected every little thing about the room, but, if a guest is going to be paying to buy this room and ones like it for life, then it is only right that a customer who has already tried it, is upfront with all the negatives about it.
Having said all that, we are lodge owners ourselves at the resort and know the quality of the item we have bought and loved for more than 30 years, so feel that the suites in the hotel are truly not thought out properly which is such a shame. The staff at the resort are an absolute joy and couldn’t be better, as is the food in the restaurant – it is real quality food, beautifully presented and served. Certainly, the suites would not be for us, but perhaps younger, more lithe persons would be happy with it, maybe. Sorry, Hilton – we are great fans of Craigendarroch and have been going there for more than 30 years, but feel the suites have let it down somewhat.
Suite ok, bathroom very poor, appalling food!
Stayed here one night and glad it wasn’t for longer!
Considering that is meant to be a luxury hotel and, to be fair the bedroom and lounge of the suite were fine but the bathroom well! Could hardly get in it! Really I was amazed and not in a good way, would not have stayed for any longer the door opened with barely space to get past the sink, you then had to go in and close the door (not easy when you need a stick to walk with and steady yourself) before you could access the shower. Thank goodness the shower was a walk-in but it could have done to have a non-slip floor.
And by the way even with another guest trying to help my companion had to go back to reception to find out where the SECOND, yes second, lift was to be found. This hotel has a lift to the first floor and then you have to find a second lift to access the other floors!
Anyway, for one night, would have overlooked all of this but then we decided to eat in the hotel – oh dear! The restaurant busy so we were happy to eat in the bar even with the ‘limited’ menu there was plenty of choice.
We ordered – I had the pie: nothing was indicated on the menu and the person taking the order did not say anything but it was getting on to 45 mins and we decided to ask when we would get our food. When we were told the pie takes 40 mins! I would have ordered something else if Imhad known.
Well a few mins later the food arrived. The pie! Well having waited 45+ mins it was awful – tough and inedible! After speaking with a member of staff I had to get a replacement meal! All that time and it wasn’t even edible. With barely an apology offered – let alone a complimentary drink or waving of the cost of the food which you would generally get in your local pub let alone a hotel of supposed repute!
We were unable to eat together as I awaited my replacement meal the other had to be eaten or go cold!
Obviously the restaurant understood we were unhappy. When I informed reception next morning it was brushed away – ‘they are aware then’ – not that the receptionist wasn’t nice, she was, it seemed endemic in across the hotel staff, not interested.
I informed the hotel in my feedback to them and basically got the same attitude!
You pay the price for this sort of hotel for a luxurious time, excellent service and customer relations – none of which this hotel appears to have!
I would not go back nor would I recommend.
No lift, warm room and a squeaky floor!
The lift from the ground to the 1st floor was out of action is it is being replaced, this was not ideal when trying to take luggage up to and down from your room and staff did not offer assistance with this.
The room was also incredibly warm with no air conditioning, when we queried this the member of staff said to open the patio door or use the fan… leaving the door open overnight is not ideal from a security perspective or for preventing wildlife from entering.
That said the grounds are very nice and the accommodation is to a good standard.. although the floor creaks a lot!
Arrived, checked in and all seemed great for our 1 night stay.
Didn’t dine here at all or have drinks as the village of Ballater has so much to offer, and I prefer to support local businesses for food etc.
However, early morning I woke and wanted fresh orange so-called reception to have some taken to our room to be told they do not have room service…….£185 for 1 night not including breakfast and they wouldn’t take us a glass of juice!!!!!
Then your offer of express checkout if skipped under your door……the bill had items added neither myself nor my husband had requested.
Therefore when checking out the rudest receptionist I have had the displeasure of meeting, said it was a mistake and not once apologised for the error, and then proceeded to take another payment of £185 from my card manually, without explaining what she was doing and the receipt showed cardholder not present, when I was right in front of her!
Other reviews also feel it is overpriced and it is, no question given what I have advised.
I don’t think I will ever return to this hotel which is a shame as the location is great, just too many things have made me feel very negatively.
