Awful
This hotel attracts low budget families. Most were really nice but there were some really rough types. Spitting in the pool, the stench of B.O, children running riot everywhere whilst parents got drunk. Lots of food wasted. Same people and kids getting mounds of food, leaving half of it than getting up to get more., rinse repeat.
Food wasn’t great. Repetitive, bones in fish not a great deal of choice.
The beer was ok but cocktails were out of a machine and didn’t seem to have any alcohol in them. Bar and restaurant staff very nice and hardworking apart from the manager. He acted like everything was coming out of his own pocket. He was also lazy and didn’t muck in when the bar was full and people were waiting for drinks. His hygiene wasn’t of a good standard either. On the first night, he sneezed all over the bottles of spirits without even trying to cover his mouth and nose. He then went on to pour drinks without washing his hands. Rest of bar and restaurant staff were very helpful and hardworking.
One lady with blonde hair (Sylvia I think) and a tall black girl were extremely helpful, hardworking and efficient.
Our room was fantastic, couldn’t fault it and the cleaners were brilliant.
The grounds were also very well looked after. The main pool area was full of chavvy types as mentioned before, spitting in the pool, smoking and drinking to excess, kids running riot and unsupervised. There is a smaller pool away from the main pool. Perhaps a good idea would be to make this adult only. Would not go again.
Horrible
We arrived at 1pm and had to wait until 4pm as was the resort’s practice, unknown to us prior to getting there, to be shown a filthy, smelly room which had a double bed, we had requested a twin room. Had to pay 50 euros for apartment key and TV remote which I had to ask for the refund when checking out, never heard of this before, no English channels anyway. Mini market advertised as open but was closed when we visited 02/10-12/10.
Shown the next apartment which although a twin room was just the same. We were told they were fully booked and no other rooms available. The room was nothing like their management photos on any website. We were forced to stay in this disgusting, dirty room for two nights. Blood stains on a chair, dust and cobwebs on the chair which staff said the room had been cleaned!!. The room smelt of stale smoke and a cooker hood falling apart. The doors were grubby, cracks on the tiles and the bath & taps looked like they had never seen bleach.
We could not cook or eat in that apartment and were forced to go out. Only room for 2 chairs on the balcony which looked over to other properties who’s dog barked constantly when anyone walked past. This block was more like Cell Block H than a holiday apartment with the balcony ledge of full of cigarette ends and bottle tops.
Went back to reception to complain again, after meeting a lovely couple who arrived on our second day who were also staying in a Standard apartment, but there’s was modern, lovely and fresh. Why had we not been offered an apartment like that? Reception staff not helpful, I think they are only helpful if you are happy with the place. Check what Lot you are offered as it’s luck of the draw. Avoid Lot 20 and 21. Offered Lot 4 which although still not as advertised was at least clean with a proper balcony with table and chairs. However we had to buy incense sticks for the apartment as during the night we would awake to the smell of what can only be described as the smell of sewers, not sure if from the holiday complex or from the block of flats across the way. No Air-con or hair-dryers in standard apartments and beds are lumpy.
Also Lot 4 seems to have Time Share residents, who like the locals from the flats across the way used a strip of ground opposite the apartment as a place to walk their dogs to poo. Never saw anyone with a poo bag either…
We booked self-catering as my friend is vegetarian however limited cooking utensils with only 2 sockets in the kitchen area. Maid service every day, and towels changed regularly which is what you would expect. We did not think the difference between standard and superior would be so vast. Below standard here compared to other places I’ve visited. If you are staying here best to book Superior.
Praia da Rocha beach lovely but shops and bars all the same, usual tourist tact, although some nice pubs with sea view. We went to a lovely pub called Espaco just around the corner from the resort several evenings run by a lovely couple.
Portimao not what I expected, a lot of high rise buildings, graffiti, dog poo and run down properties everywhere. Silves, on the other hand, was a lovely village. Portimao is not a place I will be going back or Vilarosa and I would not recommend to family & friends
Refurbishment needed
Stayed for a week with my two daughters during August high season.
House looked like never had improvements since it was built.
Location is also not great and walking routes to the beach are in some way dangerous(but that’s not Vilarosa fault)
some good but room for improvement
Firstly please note that there are 2 pages for the same place on Trip Advisor, this in and one called the ‘Vila Rosa’. Both have incorrect information about the hotel. THERE IS NO KIDS CLUB. THERE IS NO SPA. ALL ROOMS ARE NOT MODERN. ALL ROOMS DO NOT HAVE AC. ALL ROOMS DO NOT HAVE A HAIRDRYER. THERE IS ONLY 1 ONSITE RESTAURANT. THERE IS NO CONCIERGE. Next point – the is a big difference in room standard (again not showed on the hotel website) standard are old fashioned and very dated but very clean. superior (like the ones on the website) are modern, new and have AC.
I was unaware that there were different ‘standard’ of rooms until I got there and was told that I had booked a superior and a standard????? (I had booked 2 rooms). the first room in block 21, was a flashback to the 1980’s. hard lumpy bed, weird sofa bed thing for the kids, tiny bathroom, cracked tiles, TV from 1985. it was also a walk away from the main bit. after complaining and forcing myself into the manager’s office we were moved to another ‘standard’ apartment (block 23) that was similar standard but a bit fresher and nearer the pool.
HOWEVER – we were given 1 clothes hanger per person. 1 pillow per person and apart from 1 wardrobe, there is no other storage space at all. no drawers, no shelves, no cupboards. so the dining table became the place for toiletries. the cases had to be used for clothes. the balcony is unsuitable as it is only 1 chair wide so unless you sit in a line you cannot socialise on it. The maid service is every day, towels and bedding every few days *(this is non flexible).
I left some dirty towels in the bath one day indicating they needed changing they were hung back up. we also stripped the kids bed on day as it had been spilt on and needed changing and they put that back on. The maid service timing was weird to – one day they came at 9.30am the next it was 6.30pm. they would not come back when it was unsuitable, which made it hard when trying to get small kids to nap or get ready to go out early. (one day the kids were in the bath). when i spoke to reception they just said they clean until 7pm. The staff are friendly but not really knowledgeable.
The pool area is great, clean, quiet, big, sunbeds/umbrellas always available. it does get busy on weekends as there are a lot of ‘residents’ who use it so be aware. This is a large resort that has timeshares in (RCI I think) and is home/holiday to some Portuguese.
This is fine, however, be aware that the smells in the blocks/corridors are varied. Also, many have dogs that all seem to be walked at the same time at night, sounding like a scene from 101 Dalmatians. (constant barking). we did BB which was good, suitable timing and lots of choices. there is an AI option but I don’t think its a traditional AI, as drinks are limited depending on time of day and the food is not varied and very traditional eg stews and casseroles and fish. The hotel is in a residential area so there is nothing within 10 min walk. the onsite shop is very poor. No chilled drinks, expensive, poor choice, again random timing. There are 2 pools, we only used 1 due to location. the evening entertainment is strained. 3 nights a week, 15 min parrot show, 15min reptile show (1 snake, 1 iguana), Portuguese karaoke, Portuguese disco. it is a 15/20min stroll (hilly) to the main bit or PdR. you can walk to PortaMoi in 25min?
Generally speaking it was a good place quiet enough that there is no need to rush for beds, cheap enough for snacks/drinks, good location, good pools for the kids, small park (swings/slide) that can break up the day BUT I think there is stuff that needs improving – maid service, beds, room amenities, resident dogs, AC, entertainment. I personally think it has changed hands, or been took over recently so is in the process of change. There were not a lot of English people there and given that everything was aimed at the portugese I feel that is the target market. If you are looking for basic quiet hotel walking distance to town, its great
Nice hotel but all inclusive is terrible
The hotel itself is lovely. The two pool areas have plenty of sunbeds and are lovely and quiet for relaxing during the day. The room, despite being given one of the non renovated ones was fine. Lovely and clean and beds were made every day etc.
However, the all inclusive is terrible. There is very little variety and food is very bland. The running times for food are also limited and although dinner is advertised from 7-10 we arrived one night at 9 and the restaurant had been cleared as there was a band playing. We sat down to eat and were told on more than one occasion to stop talking as it was classic Portuguese music and they deem it as rude to speak during it. This is not what you want when sitting down to enjoy an evening meal.
Any alcohol other than wine and beer is not available until after 7pm. Therefore if you do not like either of these then you have to wait until after 7 to have an all-inclusive drink of choice.
Although we had read that there was a snack bar and mini market open, this was not the case. The mini market had close down and snack bar wasn’t open at all during our stay.
If going for a self catering holiday then I would recommend as the hotel itself is nice and the area is lovely. However, I would avoid all inclusive at all costs.
All inclusive..do not bother
Hotel upon arrival really nice and grounds lovely. Couldn’t fault it.
The room although we asked for a garden view, we got a pool view room which was nice and clean. It went downhill from there. Food disgusting and selection terrible. No ice cream or anything for snacks except 4 oclock when toasted sandwiches or burgers which were gone so quickly! Do not dare complain as they will make you feel very unwelcome same as another review on here.
Complained to the hotel when I came home and received an email from them accusing us of lying about food, other issues of staff putting lights off when we were still finishing our drinks. They said they moved us out of our room which they didn’t but I know a customer who did get moved when we were there and she also complained about the food, can only assume they mixed up complaints!
Hotel does not bother to respond as you will only deny our issues as you did previously. Would not stay there again due to the way we were treated but for self-catering and short break would recommend to other couples.
