Owners of Allegro Vacation Club timeshares (recently acquired by Barceló Hotels and Resorts and now known as Occidental Vacation Club) often find themselves struck in contracts with rapidly increasing maintenance fees which ultimately stem from a mis-sold timeshare. Over recent years there have been a number of seminal rulings regarding mis-sold timeshares by many timeshare groups and resorts which have resulted in refunds and compensation. Many owners of Allegro Vacation Club timeshare contracts are entitled to, or have already made claims for payment or refunds. Many of the reasons cited for wanting out of their timeshare agreements were:
A terrible experience from top to bottom
First things first, this is not a five-star hotel. Five star hotels do not have pools that close at 7pm no matter the day, accomplished by workers starting to pour buckets of chlorine and pool chemicals into the water whether anyone is in it or not.
There were hours in the evening where no food is available on-site and customer service was a joke. Their front desk and “customer service” staff were a horror to deal with, as no one would take responsibility for anything and always passed a problem onto a manager who was not on-site, ever.
We were there a week and were told no fewer than five area supervisors were unavailable for the next several days to take complaints of rudeness and outright belligerence from hotel staff. Imagine trying to pay for internet and being told that the customer service person “doesn’t believe that you have the money to pay” as you hold money in your hand.
This hotel wants to up-sell you, through it’s vacation club, to a higher “level” based on your “buy-in.” Attend the seminar at your peril, as it caused nothing but problems for us between timing and rude salespeople. But never suggest that the hotel is responsible for anything the vacation club offers or promises, even in writing, despite their obvious relationship.
And all of the hotel staff will know, based on the colour of your wristband that corresponds to your “level,” exactly how to treat you. When we refused the up-sell, the rest of our trip spiralled from an innocent mistake of moving a room all the way to having to find opened housekeeping rooms to find towels to shower with because no one would bring us any.
By the end of our trip, the day got better the moment we left the property, and returning was never a relaxing idea.
I cannot say enough that if you are American, or anything other than a rich European, you are not welcome here.

Vacation club-Long time member since 2004! Platinum level! Not so great anylonger!
Travelled Dec 23rd to Dec 30th…
Nice resort! All the palm trees had Christmas lights all over them! Very pretty.
Pros:
Nice pools…not very deep. Cool at first but refreshing. Beach is very nice! But then it is Punta Cana.Always beach chairs at the beach. Shows were ok. They had some pre entertainment at 8: 30 and at the main lobby bar a featured either a saxophonist, singer or some other form of entertainment.
Nice walk from one side to the other. Nice restaurant at the beach for lunch and turns into the seafood at dinners. Maids work hard and we always reward them!
Breakfast buffet the best! Lunch menu and dinner buffet always the same except for changing out ham for chicken etc! The buffet restaurant was a nice size!Cons:
Bars serve cheapy cheapy liquor! Blach and watered down! Not a huge variety. Draft beer was good!Food was always luke warm. Variety was ok! Typical Dominican food.
Oriental a la Carte was not that good!
Now, we bought our timeshare n 2004 Platinum level. We always get the one bedroom suite and better bar!
I like my beer from a bottle and better liquor! I don’t go there to get drunk, I go to enjoy the R&R! At the time of our arrival, we used the Occidental Beach bar at the front as we were not allowed to used First Club. We asked why? Other places we have been at Xcaret, Mexico, Papagayo Costa Rica, Allegro, DR, and we were always given the first club! What happened is Occidental and Alegro came together and changed all of the rules! yeah! Not Cool!
So we had our representative have a meeting with us!! They have been trying to get us to upgrade for years! NOW..it seems we can’t use any First Club stuff…only get an upgraded room! I was not very pleased and told us for a cheapy good price today of 6,000. we could upgrade and get the first club, not the Grand Level! not worth it! Too bad that they don’t value us members that have been there for over 10 years….and treat us like crap! We could not even get bottled beer at the vacation club after we told them that we were not interested in upgrading! Then all of a sudden today…were not such good friends! and all of a sudden no more bottled beer! Were all out suddenly after we did not want to upgrade.
Buyer beware people of timeshares! They get you at each turn!
Could Have Been Better
Pros: The room was spacious and clean. Jacuzzi tub on porch worked great. Oceanfront Room. Maid service very consistent. Awesome Beach!
Cons: Overall food and alcohol not very good. Alcohol only good at First Club bars. I felt consistently harassed by staff, even after I attended their vacation club presentation. My boyfriend and I did not qualify because of our separate addresses. It did not stop the various “ concierges “ from asking about attending every morning. I dreaded the walk from Building 26 to the lobby. Many of the staff looked unhappy to be there. I visited another resort while in Punta Cana and the employees there were much friendlier. Check-in very, very slow.
Get what you paid for; NO TIMESHARE MEETINGS
I came here for a short trip with my husband. The front desk person congratulated us on his ability to give us a nice room(THAT WE PAID FOR). We booked for a junior suite, however, we were given a blue band which gives us limited access to the resort. My husband called the front desk realized there was some confusion and received the correct platinum bands with some reluctance on the part of the front desk. Because we received information for blueband guests we didn’t know.
1. Check out and checkin is done in a clubhouse towards the back of the resort . You are transported by golf cart.
2. There is a guest manager who takes care of arranging taxis, and anything you need in that clubhouse
3. There is a hottub, food that is a tad better than what is available in the buffet
4. Also reservations at restaurants can be scheduled between 8am to 4pm. Eating in the restaurants at no extra cost unless you order a huge beautiful lobster that 2 people can eat for $65/lobster. Lobster party on Fridays.
5. Mini-bar in room is 2 small cans of Coors Light
Lastly solicitors for timeshare and or vacation club at the airport. Don’t bother. Enjoy your vacation. Building 26 room 221 is on the second floor facing the beach, but tucked behind enough for some privacy.
Definitely use hot tub as often as possible all pools close at 7
I forgot to mention the room was not cleaned. Pink lipstick all over the light switches, the mirrors in the bathroom were dirty, and even now the shelves in the refrigerator are dirty. Service excellent. Housekeeping did their best to rectify this situation. Occidental gets a 3 stars for the initial confusion of our status and the dirty room
Otherwise, resort is gorgeous.
Vacation or time share workshop?
We have just recently returned from a first time one week vacation at Occidental Punta Cana. The resort itself was very clean as was our room on the second floor of building 23. The beach was beautiful and the staff, for the most part, were wonderful.
Upon our arrival, on Sunday our building concierge was very welcoming and accommodating informing us that we were invited to a V.I.P. breakfast…NOT TRUE! The breakfast was no different than if we had gone ourselves except we had someone joining us with a sales pitch for something similar to timeshares. It was a very bad experience especially when they could not seem to except that we were not interested.
From that point on our concierge was not very friendly and avoided us as much as possible. We had a few issues during our stay so it’s not a resort that we would return to or recommend to others.
It’s kinda sad because it really is a beautiful resort with an absolutely beautiful beach but being harassed over timeshares not once but twice really left a sour taste in our mouths. Being approached would not be so bad if they accepted “no” so let’s just say it was very disappointing to be subjected to that on our first day of a one week vacation.
So if you are just looking for a week of peace and quiet and hassle-free DON’T go to this resort! If you don’t mind being harassed then by all means…go and enjoy! You may want to bring some food with you though because neither the buffet, snack bar or speciality restaurants are great…well not the speciality restaurants we tried anyways.
Will Not Be Back
I will start off by saying, this is our fourth time in Punta Cana, sixth all inclusive. Out of all the resorts I have visited, this by far was the worst experience I have ever had. Our vacation started off not too bad, although quickly went downhill.
The food at this resort is decent, the actual restaurants are much better than the buffets. The buffets serve the same selection of food day after day, with most of it not being hot. I highly recommend making reservations, the steakhouse was most definitely my favourite, we ate there twice. We paid for wifi for the week, seeing as it’s not offered at this resort, which is fine.
But the wifi was absolutely horrible. So spotty and if a lot of people are using it, extremely slow.
Another point to make, men, make sure you bring pants for the restaurants. This is the first resort we’ve stayed at that has turned us away because my boyfriend was in shorts. Not gym shorts, mind you, but nice khaki shorts. I understand, it does say it in the dress code, but so does every other resort, they just have never enforced it. The first night we had reservations at the Mexican restaurant but were turned away. The next night we went to the steakhouse, my boyfriend wearing track pants because that is all he had. They let him in with those on, but while dining we saw another man in shorts. If you’re going to enforce a dress code, it must be the same everywhere you go. We were very annoyed about that.
Lastly, nearing the end of our vacation the resort became suddenly quite busy with a group of about 100-150 locals. We’ve been in resorts before that have had locals on the weekend, however the decline in service we received was absolutely ridiculous. The pool was flooded with people, we waited half an hour for drinks at the pool because you simply could not get to it. The buffets were swarmed with people and left with no food.
The servers and bartenders ignored us, because we did not speak Spanish. It did not matter if you tipped them or not, they went right to the Spanish speaking people. They allowed people to bring large speakers to the pools and they played music so loud that we could not hear each other speak.
We came on vacation to relax, and spent a pretty penny to do so. This whole vacation was so disappointing, we will not be back to the Occidental Punta Cana, we will continue to stay at Riu resorts. Much better service, atmosphere and all around vacations.
Bottom of the barrel “resort”
My friends and I are returning from our trip to Punta Cana and I just wanted to share some things with you. We were not happy with our stay at the resort. We were not given the “all inclusive” treatment during our stay. We were denied meals, clean towels/beach towels on request, daily housekeeping, clear communication, and other things.
For example, the day of my friends birthday, we made reservations to one of the restaurants on site. When we arrived, they told us that they were closing in 15 minutes and that we could not eat. My problem is that no one advised us to make earlier reservations so we were turned around at the door. I’ve been to many all inclusive resorts and this one was the worst that I’ve experienced.
Beautiful on the outside, but the bottom of the barrel. I’ve never stayed somewhere that limits the guests’ necessities. It was outdated, our electricity went out (not controllable but notable), limited AC and uncomfortable to sleep at times, no hot water for days, 2/3 of our rooms had to be changed which caused us to be spread out across the resort.
Our soap dispenser fell from the shower wall when we arrived and housekeeping literally overlooked it for 3 days without fixing or refilling it. We were even expected to return the room keys and dirty/wet beach towels to the front desk at check-out which is wack to me. It was a mess! I can honestly say that the only thing I enjoyed about this place was the distance from the local bars and clubs. Other than that, it was a big bust and I wish I had spent my money elsewhere.
Do Not Waste Your Money. Leaks, Roaches, and Non ENGLISH Speaking Staffs
This is the worst resort I have ever stayed in Punta Cana. Staff did not speak or understand ENGLISH. Room was leaking water from ceiling and roaches. Food was not good at all. Not too much variety. Timeshare reps were very annoying every day. Bartenders do not understand ENGLISH and always gave the wrong order of drinks.
Really Bad Experience!
Hotel room had a roach. Pool was dirty. Buffet staff was rude. There’s an information desk on each section of the hotel that has a person there waiting at all times to sell you some type of ‘timeshare‘. Nobody at the hotel was helpful or friendly. From the minute we walked in to the moment we left not one single person said good morning/good afternoon/or good night. Nobody really cared that we were there. You can definitely tell nobody really knows what good customer service means!!!!
