Rooms are great, but...
During my recent stay at Diamond Resorts Cypress Pointe in Orlando, FL, I had multiple problems with the staff at the facility. The overall facility, accommodations, and amenities were fantastic, but the staff was an issue. 1.) Upon arrival, I was pressured to attend a timeshare interview/information session by the Concierge, and she did not want to take “no” for an answer.
I did not request any special tickets or services from the Concierge and was told repeatedly that was the only way to get those things from the resort – even after I stated that I already had my tickets and did not need theirs. I understand that it is her job to get people into those sessions, but there comes a point after saying no multiple times, that you need to get the point and let me move on to get into my room. 2.) While browsing the gift shop, upon exiting, I saw some additional items in the window display case that I was interested in knowing the prices of, and asked my son to re-enter the shop to check said prices. After he walked out, a little further down the display case, I saw one more item that I wanted to price, and re-entered the store myself to do so.
I was immediately confronted by the worker who had previously been enthralled in her soap opera on her iPad that she was watching that kept her from even speaking to me during my initial visit, with an accusatory tone of “Is there something you need help with?” She did not say this nicely at all. There were multiple other customers in the store, none of which she spoke to at all either, and she felt because I re-entered the store, that I must be up to some nefarious act and needed to be questioned. 3.) On one of the days, my wife and 4-year-old son were at the outdoor playground equipment, and my son was playing and having a blast.
It began to get cloudy, however, there was no rain, no thunder, nor lightning, but Security approached them and demanded that they leave the area, which severely upset my four-year-old who thought he did something wrong to have to leave the playground. 4.) While playing ping-pong in the Arcade Lounge, Security interrupted my game to say we needed to stop because there was a gentleman sitting in the chair behind the ping-pong table, because the ball could put his eye out. First of all, the gentleman was with us and knew that he could potentially be struck by a ball, but not to the point of losing an eye. Second of all, if it was such a big potential safety issue, why did the facility place a chair there to begin with. Third, there were Arcade Lounge employees sitting on the floor nearby interacting with my group in a playful manner by keeping score and joking with us about my son’s “poor” play, and they never once mentioned that it was an issue for him to sit there or for us to play while he was sitting there. And finally, when I told the Security Guard that I wasn’t going to stop playing because of the gentleman in the chair, he became frustrated and stopped me in mid-sentence to turn to the gentleman and ask him if he wanted to move or if he wanted the Security Guard to stop the game for him – of which my father-in-law (who was the gentleman in the chair by the way), told the guy to take a hike because it wasn’t that big of a deal to potentially be hit by a ping-pong ball. 5.) Finally, the wi-fi in the facility was not free and would cost $5 per day, per device.
And oh by the way, the buildings seemed to be constructed in such a way that you had absolutely zero cell phone signal in the rooms. While our overall stay was great because of the fun we had at the parks, and the rooms were very nice and comfortable, I will not be staying with a Diamond Resorts facility in the future if this is the level of treatment I will receive from its employees.
BEWARE - Please Read
This is my first review on Tripadvisor and it’s for a good reason. This is a little lengthy but worth the read as I am not an amateur traveller.
As a Disney buff, I decided to take my girlfriend here late September. I had a gift card from my credit card points to cover some of the hotel. This was an Orbitz Global Hotel Card. Little did I know prior to booking, Cypress Pointe is a timeshare. This was the last thing I expected and would not have booked this hotel.
We arrived for 4 nights beginning September 26th, 2016. I love Disney and took my girlfriend with me as she hasn’t been to Orlando since she was a child. I know the area well and wanted something close to the property but far enough away where other things in Orlando could be enjoyed.
We checked in and still not knowing this was a timeshare, was immediately pressured to see a man at the front door once I was handed my room key. I quickly realized that I was set up for some sort of introduction to the timeshare. We walked right past the guy and he looked back at us with a dirty look.
Problem # 1
We arrived at the building which was three buildings away from the main entrance. There are three floors and of course I was assigned to the third floor. NO ELEVATOR. We searched high and low for an elevator and were dumbfounded. Having stopped at Walgreens prior to our arrival, we had to carry backpacks, cases or water and two large suitcases up two flights of stairs. We entered our studio and could smell must/mold. Prior to unpacking, I called the front desk and asked for a first floor room and told them that I was never told there was no elevator. They stated that there was no other options and were sorry for the inconvenience.
Problem # 2
We unpacked and I was walking around with socks on when I stepped near the closet. My feet became soaked. The floor had water backup from the A/C condenser and this wasn’t a new issue. The baseboard near the closet was painted white and had bubbling on it and was turning brown. This shows me that the floor has been wet for a long period of time. Everything had to be moved and could not step anywhere within 5 feet of the closet.
Problem # 3
We set up our cell phone chargers and some other items that required to be charged. Each side of the bed had outlets and both were not working properly. It appears that the outlets were worn out. The chargers would literally fall out of the outlets. I had to bend the chargers and use pressure on them from the night stands to actually make them stay in the outlet.
Problem # 4
We were not told at check-in that there is no full service unless you are staying a week or longer. REALLY? After the first day and two showers each, we returned to the hotel in the afternoon after the parks to see our beds unmade and towels on the ground. I grabbed the paperwork and pages deep, I saw that you get full service if your staying a full week or you have the option to pay each day at an additional cost. I can’t remember for sure but I think it was 15 dollars per day. RIDICULOUS. we dried our towels on the porch each day and used the beach towels as well in the closet. Why should I be paying for this? WE WEREN’T EVEN GIVEN THE OPTION or told about this at check-in.
Problem # 5
The room was very dirty and outdated. The carpets were stained and the shower had watermarks all over it. The toilet would run for approx. 3 minutes everytime. The toilet is in it’s own little room and when you put the light on and close the door, it would remain dark as the florescent bulb would take forever to heat up. The door into the studio would not close properly and needed to be pushed hard to lock. The minifridge felt well above 40 degrees and would not use it for this reason.
Overall, we were definitely disappointed in the property. Being a DIAMOND RESORT, I would have imagined it different and not run down. We were let down. I am an avid traveler and have been on dozens of vacations throughout the US and Caribbean. By far for the price and amenities, this place had been a complete let down. At approx. 99 dollars a night, there are many other options in Orlando that I would rather have stayed at close to Disney property.
Sorry, never again.
My wife, 3 year old, and I stayed at the Cypress pointe resort for one of our many visits to Disney.
Staff – very unprofessional. At check-in the person helping me out kept calling me “bro”. Don’t know why, I’m neither his brother nor a close friend. He found it funny when I asked him if the pillows in the room were made of feathers. I’m highly allergic to feathers. When I mentioned that, he asked me if I was allergic to chicken. I said no… I’m allergic to feathers not chicken… There are many animals other than chickens that have feathers. Dr. Check-in agent proceeded to diagnose my allergies by saying “well, if you are allergic to feathers then you are allergic to chicken”. It was great to have a check-in agent, a doctor and Confucius all at 11pm.
The building – because we paid $80 per night on an online deal, obviously they put us on the 3rd floor with no elevator. Yep… There are no elevators. Get ready for a workout when you get there.
Amenities – well…. You get a room, a bed, TV and linens. You want wifi – extra.. You want a safe – extra… You want service – extra. I mean seriously, come on, $20 per week for Internet. 99% of all resorts in the area have free WiFi. And by the way, I don’t pay $20 for Internet per month at my house, what makes you think I’m going to pay that per week! And to pay for a safe? Come on!!
Room – there are 3 types… A 3 bedroom, a 2 bedroom and a studio. The studio forms part of the 3 bedroom. So it’s like a big master bedroom. If you stay at the studio your A/C is controlled by the main apartment. So your room temperature is dictated by people who you don’t know and never met. Yes, there is a wall A/C in the studio, when we turn it on, a cloud of dust came out. The walls are paper thin. You can hear EVERYTHING!!! Even whispers.
Check out procedures – check out is at 10am not 11am like most hotels in the area. If you check out pass 10am they charge you $225 for the day. You must wash your dishes and throw away your trash before you leave. I don’t know the consequences for not doing your dishes but knowing them it has to do with a fee or getting grounded with no dessert.
The only good thing is the location. Is like 12 min from Disney but there are so many options on that street that I would not revisit Cypress pointe resort… Ever! I didn’t feel comfortable, I didn’t feel like a guest.
It’s unfortunate because the place has so much potential…
I hope this review helps you make a smart decision when spending your hard earned money.
Very different from other Diamond properties
As usual, the room was clean and well kept. But not consistent with other Diamond (former Sunterra) properties. My sister is a 20+ year owner. We have travelled to many many places and always stay at Diamond properties. We expected the same treatment as we received last year at Mystic Dunes. We got a big surprise. There was not even close to enough parking for the number of rooms. When we arrived we were whisked off to a special VIP office where we were given our keys and some complimentary water and soda.
We had a 3 bedroom suite which included a lock off room. When we got to the room, the lock off room was locked with a keyed deadbolt. We called the front desk and they said they would send someone from security to open it.
In less than two minutes a very nice man from security was at the door and opened it. We had also discovered that we could not open the patio door. He looked at it and could not open it either.
He radioed someone from maintenance and within minutes a very nice man came and fixed the door. They were both polite and very helpful and quickly resolved the issues. We had two people arriving by air at different times. We called the front desk to let them know we were having a late arrival. Since we were all 50+and disable women we asked to have them shuttled to our room by golf cart after they were dropped off at the office by Mears Transportation. This was happily done by the staff at Mystic Dunes last year.
So our first friend arrived about 1:30 am. We got a text from her saying she was at the office and no one would bring her to the room. So one of us had to get up and get dressed and drive to the office to pick her up. Really? Was security that busy at !:30am on a Monday morning that they couldn’t accommodate this request? The person at the front desk said there was no note in the file about it.
The next day another party arrived around 2 pm. After what happened the night before, my sister made sure they were aware and the front desk assured us they would bring her to the room.
She had recently sprained both ankles in an accident and was not very mobile. Again the front desk refused to bring her to the room. So she walked, on two sprained ankles to the room.
This may seem like small potatoes, but we always were accommodated at the other Diamond properties and thought that the treatment of the guests should be consistent across properties.
At Mystic Dunes there was a hotel cart provided for each building to transport luggage from the car. Not at Cypress Pointe. So us two senior disabled ladies had to drag our luggage from the car to the room. The car was parked pretty far away because there was not enough parking. Our cell phones did not work in the room and there was a charge for the wi fi at the resort.
Again very different from Mystic Dunes. They had some small limitations, but it was no charge. We went from feeling very VIP to very insignificant. We will never stay there again. From now on we will request anywhere but Cypress Pointe on future trips to Orlando.
Everything was either dirty or broken!
My family stayed for a week at this resort on our three-week vacation, we had just left the grand beach which was beautiful and clean and luxurious.
We arrived at Cypress Pointe to find a resort that looked run down and dated. Every unit looked out to parking lots, the grounds were not well maintained and there was no elevator to get our six suitcases up three flights of stairs. the safe broke the first day as well as the dishwasher, we spent a lot of time phoning the front desk for maintenance and then waiting for them to get there.
The second day the air conditioner broke, again a lot of time out of our VACATION day trying to get it fixed. It took them 2 days to get it fixed. On the fourth day the garbage disposal backed up and flooded the kitchen and maintenance said it had not been cleaned in a very long time and that what caused the back up.
All said it was very disappointing, not remotely relaxing. My advice, stay anywhere else than here.
Give it a miss
My mother and I booked to stay here for 2 weeks between 16th July-30th Aug.
Our 1st flight to JFK was delayed by 2hrs which meant we missed our connecting flight to Orlando and ended up spending the night in New York.
When we finally arrived at Cypress Pointe the receptionist said they had no reservations for us.
I explained that we should of arrived the day before but plane delays held us up.
We was told to take a seat in the reception area whilst they tried to find our reservation.
After nearly 40 minutes the manager came over and aggressively told us that they had cancelled our reservation as we didn’t call them to tell them that we were going to be a day late!!!!!!!!!
We had paid (in advance) to stay there for 2 weeks, so we was unsure why they cancelled our reservation.
After a long debate they finally found a room for us.
Once we got into the room I could of cried! There was one double bed and a bath in the middle of the room.
This room is for couples, not a mother and daughter.
I called reception straight away to ask for a 2 bed room and one with a private bathroom and was told that it would be an extra $45 dollars per night to get a room changed.
By then I just wanted to go home. I couldn’t afford to pay that so we ended up staying put.
I found the staff at the hotel very standoffish and the concierge staff are only trained to tell you about the wonders of all of the theme parks or to try and hard sell you into a timeshare meeting. They know nothing else. We asked where the local bank was.. They didn’t know. We asked where the shopping malls were and they only knew about the Disney based ones. The walls in the bedroom are paper thin so you can hear every word your neighbours speak.
The staff in the cafe and bar were nice and friendly and the pools were warm and nice.
Apart from that, there are no positives about this hotel.
Definitely wouldn’t go back. Anybody thinking about going here, give it a miss.
Beware Of Hard Sell
Despite me usually being very good at checking the reviews before I book any hotel, I wasn’t aware this was a timeshare operation. After having travelled from the UK for 12+ hours, all I wanted to do was check in quickly and go to bed. Reception, unfortunately, had other ideas. Avoid all invitations to receive their ‘welcome pack’ from the 2nd reception desk as they will just hold you up for 30+ mins giving you the hard sell on their timeshare presentation the following morning. Just to get away I foolishly agreed to go to the presentation and was promptly debited USD 30.00 as a holding deposit, and ID & credit check carried out after asking lots of personal questions re my income etc. All this just so I could get a discount on any theme park prices I wanted to book during my stay.
The good news is that we went to the 2 hour timeshare presentation the following day and I didn’t sign up to a timeshare. The polite but persistent sales guy gave up trying after 65 mins as I made it clear we were only there for the theme park ticket discounts. The further good news was that the discounts were quite good when comparing them to various online ticket discounters.
I have to say the bed was very very comfortable, good quality linen. The only negative on the room is that the walls and interconnecting door are not soundproofed and we had a very poor first nights sleep due to very noisy neighbours, fortunately, they checked out the following day and we had no further problems with noise.
Have mixed feelings about this resort, not sure I would stay there again just because I hate being given the hard sell pitch immediately upon arrival, I think I would prefer a traditional hotel next time.
