After the ground-breaking ruling passed by the Spanish Supreme Court in 2015, customers were refunded 40,000 euros and granted timeshare releases – after timeshares were mis-sold.
This ruling along with other major judgments has meant that customers are entitled to timeshare releases and claims against resorts such as Club La Costa under the following circumstances:
The Monterey is quite terrible in comparison to the Royale.
We spent our first week in the Royale then moved across to the Monterey for our second week. We were moved to an apartment same size as the one we were in however that’s where the similarities end. Our apartment was on the first floor right above reception & the turning circle. Friday is changeover day so for the whole of that day was a procession of taxis picking up and dropping people off, right up to the early hours. As our apartment was overlooking the turning circle the tiled floor on the terrace was filthy – despite the reception staff claiming it had been cleaned that morning.
The rooms in the Monterey were not air conditioned and as it is built on a hill (the bedrooms were on street level) didn’t feel comfortable having the bedroom windows open. So we had a difficult nights sleep.
The patio furniture was also quite worn and dated. In fact I did mention this to reception & was rewarded with their little speech of ‘we are constantly upgrading our apartments, working on a continuous cycle and our apartment was next in line for an upgrade’ Still didn’t really explain why there was furniture around the pool in better condition than our terrace furniture.
I would advise anyone to either spend that little bit more and book into the Royale or for a similar cost to the Monterey look at the Sunningdale village in Golf Del Sur which is fantastic for families.

Nice Enough
Stayed here for a week as a complimentary week with CLC and it is a nice resort split into the Monterey and Monterey Royale.
Staying in the Royale, which I’m told has slightly larger rooms and a hot tub on the balcony, the apartment is spacious and has most things you need in it.
The resort is on a steep hill and if you are looking for a quiet break then it is ideal but if you want more to do the beach is about a 15 – 20 minute walk away with supermarkets and small restaurants on the way. (Siam Park water park is next door though)
Onsite restaurant is nice enough with a small supermarket onsite which is a lot more expensive then it should be but it’s convenience and the main pool was closed for refurbishment so I can’t comment on that or the sunrise bar.
There were issues with strong smells in the bedroom which didn’t have great ventilation and quite bad uncomfortable beds and there was a small bug problem in the kitchen which was a pain when it came to food preparation and storage.
This is why I would say it’s a nice place rather then a great place, its clean and tidy and the staff are very friendly and helpful and the views are great but it’s just slightly cut off and could do with a few tweaks.
don’t fall for this
A free holiday sounds good which it was, lovely apartment great view, met the rep on Wednesday, free breakfast , then it began, taken on a bus to CLC paradise showed us what they were offering which was a point system the more money you spent the more points you got, then back on a bus back to CLC Monterey shown the royal apartment which was amazing . Then back on bus to CLC paradise what started of as £11000 ended up at £45000 said we couldn’t afford so another one was offered £8000 but paid £30000 same again but the pressure was on they wanted to sell got them down to £3000 but still have £1000 a year for maintenance , when we said we didn’t want it there tones changed but we stuck to our guns they weren’t happy and we got n the bus and went back , don’t fall for this con , restaurant expensive but staff are lovely
Lovely room great views.
We recently stayed here in the Monterey Royale for a week, there were 6 of us in a 2 bedroom apartment. The apartment was clean and spacious with views out onto the pool and sea. Beds were okay, sofa bed was hard as nails. Hot tub on the large balcony is lovely and defo a treat after a day of sunbathing. It took 3 days and a complaint to get any fresh towels or bedding but then after this, they were changed regularly.
This is a nice and quiet hotel a good 30 min walk down a very!!!! Steep hill to the nearest beach. Not a lot around unless you walk to the beach where there are plenty of bars and restaurants, or a short taxi ride down costs no more the 3-5 euros.
The pool bar is okay, breakfast was around 6euro full a full English, lunchtime burger and chips around 8euro I think, reasonably priced for a pool bar. The staff here are very friendly. Get ready for constant busloads of potential buyers all day most days as the reps (or sharks as we called them) try to sell shares in this complex.
There’s an evening restaurant which was very nice, bit more expensive but the food was lovely. Watch out for the waiter handing out bread rolls, you will be charged for these but they don’t tell you this when handing them out! Overall a nice stay here although not a 5* as we had been told.
CLC Monterey
This review is for CLC Monterey not Monterey Royale. The two hotels are located next to each other and share the same reception.
I stayed in a three bedroom apartment it was lovely and had two large terraces. The only downfall I had to take 4 lifts to get to my room. The staff are amazing and helpful.
The hotel is located on top of a steep hill which is killer to walk up when the sun is out. Taxis are around €5 to skip the hill. The restaurants are ok but pricey. Breakfast is €6.95 but the cafe at the bottom of the hill sells breakfast for €2.95. Evening entertainment at the hotel is non existent. I wouldn’t stay with kids, I think they would be bored.
OK to Good in parts but too reliant on selling you a timeshare in CLC.
We stayed in a two-bed apartment which was a nice size, although bedrooms could have been more spacious. The accommodation is a bit dated and the big downside for us is the lack of air con, particularly in the bedrooms.
The fans just do not do the job.
The kitchenette, lounge and bathrooms are all good as is the excellently sized balcony. This is the third CLC property we have stayed in Adeje or Golf Del Sur and out of the three we would rate this one third although all three sites and rooms are very similar. This resort is at the top of a steep hill and there are lots of stairs so not for the less mobile.
The swimming pool is one of the best we have ever used and there are many sunbeds and parasols and no need to get up early and reserve (our pet hate!). The grounds are immaculately kept with many trees and neatly manicured bushes.
WIFI available throughout resort as part of your package. Check out/ check in is a strict 10am/4pm with a mid-week clean/ change of sheets/towels and for members (not sure if everyone gets this though) there is a welcome pack on arrival which is a help.
There is an on-site restaurant, shop, and daytime poolside bar with lunchtime menu plus other pool side activities as well as evening entertainment. As we had a car we didn’t dine there any evening although the menu looked good and compared well to eateries elsewhere in Playa de las Americas (a ten minute drive).
There is a brand new hypermarket a 5 minute drive (Siam Mall) beside Siam Park which is very handy if self catering.
Whilst not for this review, other than in passing, guests will get pestered by CLC timeshare salespeople and as members of long standing we did not welcome this as rather than advise us on how best to use our current membership they were intent on selling us more, currently Signature suites and fractional ownership.
The adjoining Monterey Royale is awash with viewings each day and at least two apartments are kept for showings thus depriving owners of being able to book them. They look really good! If only we could book one with less than 12 months wait!
I hope this gives you a balanced view of our visit (four adults).
£99 promotional stay
Before I start I have to say we had a wonderful sales manager Ean who was very polite and truthful and didn’t force us to sign up to the timeshare.
Although Monterey is advertised as 4* we were placed in 2* accommodation with a dated and dirty bathroom full of bugs quite frequently. To make matters worse the room was only cleaned once during our stay. It seemed silly that as a couple with good income very capable of signing up to the timeshare we were put in such accommodation as this put us off signing up with club la Costa. Our accommodation didn’t leave us confident in the standard of their accommodation in different resorts.
The staff at the Sunset restaurant were lovely. The pool. Was quite small as was closed for guests at 5:30 when the lifeguard went. I would say avoid the promotional holiday. By the time you pay for flights it’s best to invest in a quality hotel for a couple hundred pounds more.
Feel we were set up again!!
We had booked in February to stay in the Monterey Royale we have looked forward to this since. On arrival we were informed that was NOT staying in it but your apartment is really nice with a sea view.
On arriving at the apartment after waiting 2 hours for it to be prepared. It was so small no hanging space shabby furniture which was stained and chipped!!!
On reporting this we were asked to attend a meeting we would be collected at 10 am where we would be taken for breakfast (excellent food).
At the meeting, it came VERY clear that we had been set up as it was yet another sales pitch so another day of our precious weeks holiday waisted.
I was told on the phone that I would be getting a response from head office before we left I am still waiting!!!
Club la rip off
There are 2 sections to this resort, the older block and the newer ‘club Royale’ block…. when we were shown around this resort during the presentation they clearly neglected to take us to the older more established part of the resort…
Also, our membership is not full membership, we have the trial membership… again.. thank goodness I didn’t commit to lifetime membership if this is how you get treated for investing £20,000….!!! As Trial members we were not able to get the Club Royale rooms (even though we were not told this in the sales pitch)… incidentally, the Sales Manager who tried to upgrade yus this week advised that as a trial member we would only get access to 15% of their available resorts…!!
Hate Club la Costa
The place is great, other than up a steep hill and the little shop selling stuff, way over the odds.
But would not recommend anyone to get involved with Club la Costa.
This place is full of the reps selling the “timeshare” experience, which we have not enjoyed.
The Monterey is quite terrible in comparison to the Royale.
The rooms in the Monteray were not air-conditioned and as it is built on a hill (the bedrooms were on street level) didn’t feel comfortable having the bedroom windows open. So we had a difficult nights sleep. The patio furniture was also quite worn and dated.

worst place stayed in years!
10 am to 6.30 pm screams from water park relentless.
Headed for the upper pool for quiet only to find that the tiles around the pool had large gaps where grouting failed, lots of nasty biting ants round sunbeds and rules of the pool being ignored by many guests.
Nowhere to go to avoid smokers. Restaurant greatly improved and prices not too bad. Staff better and much more friendly than on other visits. CLC need to get these apartments updated asap.
Don’t bother
Avoid the sales meetings like the plague. We went (why oh why?!) and regretted it- the salesman was very rude when we weren’t interested in buying the membership.
It went on for 3-4 hours, not the one hour we were promised, and put a sour note into our day.
In short, wouldn’t bother staying here again.
