Just decent enough
I’ve stayed at the expedition station a few times.
What is good is that it is slope side and you can strap the gear on and start skiing/boarding fright from the slope side door.
Rentals are also in the same building.
They fairly often have “deals” here and the price is decent.
The cons are the rooms I’ve been in are quite small and I wouldn’t call them up to date.
My guess is they are used for rentals by owners who haven’t a lot of thought going to spend a bit on them.
Least expensive Studio but limited amenities
Room – We’ve stayed @ Expedition Station many times as the studio & junior studio units are some of the more economical on Snowshoe.
I prefer the units that face the slopes but you can hear the snow blowers at night so if you prefer quiet, opt for a valley-facing unit on a higher floor if you have such an option.
Each unit is individually owned so it is worth it to pay about 2% more for one of the deluxe units to ensure you get a comfortable bed that hasn’t been worn out. There are only studio and 2 bedroom units so if you are seeking a 1 bedroom, try a different building like Rimfire or Highland House.
Amenities – These units do not have central air but the window units are hidden under a large structure that spans the entire room and can be used for clothes and gear storage during your trip.
No Hot Tubs in this complex but if you rent from Snowshoe directly you often get free access to Split Rock Pool & the 2 Hot tubs located there.
There is no underground parking & the lot adjacent & designated for Expedition Station fills up FAST so unless your weekend check-in is on a Thursday, you may well have to park in the larger general parking lot that can be about a 5 minute walk. Note: You CAN drop off gear and people within about 50 feet of the front door but you can’t park at the drop off area.
No frills but great location
My family has stayed at this motel on several trips to Snowshoe, WV. We have been pleased each time.
The only reason I gave it three stars is because it is a no-frills motel without a concierge or desk service.
The rooms are small but clean and contain most everything you need for a short stay on the mountain.
Suites have a coffee maker, mini-fridge, microwave, two burner stove and sink.
It’s small but efficient.
The absolute best part of this hotel is the location! It’s the first one you reach on the mountain and it’s ski-in, ski-out location is second to none. It’s also located directly about the Expedition rental shop which is oh so convenient.
Not to mention the fact that the kid’s ski classes meet right outside your door.
All of this makes up for whatever the small room lacks!
We travel every other March and will definitely stay here again. PS) Our last stay was in March 2015, but it wouldn’t let me go back that far.
Great location, poor accommodations
We spent a weekend getaway at Snowshoe and booked Expedition Station for its central location to the slopes and within the village. That aspect was fantastic!
However, this place is no more than a cheap budget motel. When we arrived, our room was a decent size (300 sq ft), and technically had all the amenities described by the resort website. However, there is a huge difference between having something and being useful.
First… the furniture: extremely outdated, worn, and needing serious replacement. Carpets were disgusting, and fixtures were easily 20 years old. The bed was perhaps the worst part. In our unit, there was a pull down bed hidden in a wall cabinet that converts to a table. The cabinet itself was damaged severely. We weren’t sure the “bed” would pull down. When we did manage to pull it down, it was easily the worst “mattress-like” piece of furniture imaginable. Thin, worn, and hard as the floor. Don’t expect a decent night’s sleep after your slope side fun.
The linens/blankets were non-existent, and we had to hunt for the extras that were reserved for the pull out couch. When we got those blankets out, the comforter had a 2 foot in diameter coffee stain. Pillows were flat and scarce.
Basically, if you’re planning a stay here, come to enjoy the slopes and tire yourself out so much that your accommodations don’t matter.
A little old, but adequate stay
This was my first stay at Expedition Station and while overall it was a good stay, there were some parts that could have been better.
The units are a little outdated and could use a renovation.
There was also minimal lighting in the room and it was a little too dark once the sun went down.
However, Expedition Station is in a great location and the rooms are a good size.

Filthy and smelly
Snowshoe was packed so there were only a few rooms available so we took a room at this condo.
The barren, small lobby smelled weird as did the hallway to our room.
The room was small but had a decent view. That’s all of the positives. I ran a Wet One over the little end tables and got not dust bunnies but dust feathers!!
There was a big wad of gum stuck to the front of the telephone.
What looked like milk was all over the front of the dark gray mini kitchen cabinet. I tried to wipe it off but it was hardened on the wood.
The carpet had bits of trash on it…I could go on and on. What’s worse is we were told this unit had just been cleaned! Stay away from this place!
Manager does not care about dirty air filters!!!! OR customer Health
We checked in at 1PM, we alerted the front desk that the room had 2 light bulbs out, broken remotes and A DIRTY AIR FILTER that is so dirty I am sneezing as soon as we entered!!! So Nasty!!! After 2 hrs I called back…. then at 730PM I called again and was transferred to “JANE” the manager. I explained the problem and was given the standard “we alerted the staff” ……..she did NOT care and did NOT apologize at all!!!!!
The furniture is WORN OUT and the cleanliness is way below par. They should rent this place by the hour for parties.
I will never bring my family back here.
Management needs to be fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No One is There to Take care of You
Yes it is close to everything but we had a bad stay…
The parking lot was full so we had to park a half mile down the road.
The wind was blowing 20 mph and the sidewalk was a sheet of ice even in front of the door, no salt or sand had been put down. My husband fell and hurt his arm. No one works at the hotel, there is no front desk on site.
Our comforter had hair and some really disgusting crusty goo stuck to it. When we called the front desk, which is down the road, they said they would give us a new comforter, instead they gave us a duvet cover with no comforter inside. My husband talked to the housekeeper in the morning and she said she would wash the comforter and bring it back but we never saw her again.
Customer service was not a strength there. Bring your own sheets and pillows and don’t expect to be pampered. It would be great for college students.
Needs a little upgrade
I love Snowshoe! The Village is always beautiful, the outsides of the buildings are incredibly well kept.
This was my first stay in Expedition Station.
The room was considered a junior suite. I was a bit surprised by the furnishings – the 70’s called while I was there & asked for their furniture back. The furniture was well worn, at one time appears to have been “pleather”, and now is badly peeling.
The bed was a mattress on a solid wood frame on the floor, which is great for short folks.
The walls were badly scuffed & in need of painting. I realize that many of these units are privately owned, so this is by no means a reflection on the resort itself.
Seems like the owner would show a little pride of ownership & do a little updating/refreshing.
As a side note, my colleague was in an adjacent room. The room was nearly identical, with the same furnishings & scuffed walls.
Can’t beat the Convenience
We crammed 5 people into our junior studio deluxe and it was small, but totally manageable for a ski trip.
You wake up, walk down the hall to the ski locker room, grab your gear, walk out the door and you are on the slopes ready to shred. The bed was very comfortable. I was ready for a terrible bed based on another review, but I was very surprised.
I slept great and the noise from the groomers wasn’t bad at all. We skipped the pullout couch and used an air mattress instead so I can’t comment on the couch sleep ability, but I can say that the room can accommodate 5 adults with an air mattress.
It even came with a coffee maker and free coffee each morning, which was an unexpected perk.
The only reason I’m not giving 5 stars is that there is no hot tub.
Logging hot tub hours is just as important as logging skiing hours when your on a ski trip.
You do get access to the hot tub on the other side of the village, but it’s like a 3 minute walk. Not the end of the world, but not the best situation.
Overall, I would not hesitate to stay here again.
